It's as old as time itself waking periodically to check on its domain, this time some of it is missing, and a price must be paid. The Hamilton County Consortium purchased a small portion of Hamilton Woods to meet the needs of a growing community and a local developer. An elementary school, a multi-use athletic field and three homes were constructed on the purchased site. Two of the families, the Munches and Andreas', have children attending the elementary school. The third family, the Snodgrass', is a retired couple, a professor of American History and his research assistant wife. A Native American couple serves as caretakers for the nature preserve that serves as a buffer between Hamilton Woods and the purchased land. When a high school age girl is found comatose standing on the street fronting the nature preserve a local police officer has suspicions and discovers that low profile visitors to the woods have also gone missing but are overlooked. The Munch and Andreas children begin having nightmares and a Teacher's Aide is not what she appears to be. The professor discovers some disturbing information about the woods and approaches the caretakers. The caretakers confide in the academics and reveal that they are there for a reason. Together the three families, the caretakers and the policeman slowly put the pieces together and confront the threat. Peter Thomas Brodowski is an American author. 39N-86W was his first novel. Confluence was the follow up to 39N-86W and Summer Seed is book III and conclusion to the Crem Creation trilogy. Peter was born June 6, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. His maternal grandparents were immigrants from Poland. He attended Saint Michael's elementary school, John Jay public high school and the City University of New York before ultimately graduating from California State University Fullerton with a bachelor's degree in Biological Science in 1981. Peter went on to a master's degree in Business Admisistration in 1986, from the University of Phoenix. Between his time in New York and completing his education out west, he served four years in the U.S.A.F stationed mainly in the Pacific region and Southeast Asia with the Military Airlift Command. Peter was married to Janice Lynn Boule in 1971, and has two sons, David Thomas and Joseph Thomas. After spending more than 20 years in Southern California, Peter and Jan relocated to Carmel, Indiana in 1994. Peter's writing career began after working more than 40 years in the medical device industry as a Chemist, Scientist, Engineer, Manager, Director and Notified Body auditor and consultant. He continues to provide consulting services while writing novels. Peter enjoys driving his sport car, healthy cooking, reading novels and keeping fit through a balanced program of cardio and weight training.

Landscapes, Genomics and Transgenic Conifers

What is the future of genetically modified (or transgenic) conifer plantations? The content of this edited volume Landscapes, Genomics and Transgenic Conifers addresses this question directly - and indirectly - using language drawn from policy, forest history, genomics, metabolism, pollen dispersal and gene flow, landscape ecology, evolution, economics, technology transfer and regulatory oversight. Although the book takes its title from a Nicholas School Leadership forum held November 17-19, 2004 at Duke University, its de novo contents move past the forum’s deliberations. The result is a trans-disciplinary book composed of 14 chapters written by a total of 31 authors working in North America, South America, Europe and Africa. The book is written for policy experts, life scientists, government and business leaders, biotechnology writers and activists. Few decision-makers realize the unprecedented degree to which transgenic technology is now possible for forests on a commercial scale. Only a handful of the 550 living conifer species is used for commodity value and even fewer species are being developed for transgenic plantations. Transgenic field trials started within the last decade but no transgenic pine plantations exist in 2005. But emergence of transgenic forest trees is still so recent that dialogue about the pros and cons is confined to the scientific community. And dialogue must move out into the public domain. So little opportunity remains for opening public dialogue. The pursuit of transgenic research for forest trees is principally corporate so novel forest tree phenotypes are created as a means to increase shareholder value for investor companies. And while potential benefits will accrue to shareholders, ecological risks for certain transgenic traits are likely to be shared due to long-distance gene flow and inadequate bioconfinement measures. So this is a question riddled with tension. Without public deliberation, we should expect alienation of several interest groups. Alienation will lead to heightened clashes in the public policy arena or even radical environmental action. But how to move dialogue on transgenic forests forward? One must re-frame the issues behind transgenic conifer plantations. The goal of this volume is to provide content for public deliberations about the genetic composition of future forests. Its Section I is composed of provocative and opposing views on the question of transgenic conifer plantations. Sections II and III follow with research advances on relevant conifer genomics and ecology research, respectively. Section IV forecasts rates of technology adoption for different case studies. Finally, Section V compares the status of regulatory oversight of transgenic forest trees between Canada and the United States. But will the book fulfil its goal? The burden of the answer lies with its readers. Will readers act – or will transgenic forests be seen as too remote or simply too rural to bother with the angst of public deliberation?

Incremental Speech Translation

Human language capabilities are based on mental proceduresthat are closely linked to the time domain. Listening, understanding, and reacting, on the one hand, as well as planning, formulating, and speaking, onthe other, are performedin a highlyover lapping manner, thus allowing inter human communication to proceed in a smooth and ?uent way. Although it happens to be the natural mode of human language interaction, in cremental processing is still far from becoming a common feature of today’s lan guage technology. Instead, it will certainly remain one of the big challenges for research activities in the years to come. Usually considered dif?cult to a degree that rendersit almost intractableforpracticalpurposes, incrementallanguageprocessing has recently been attracting a steadily growing interest in the spoken language pro cessing community. Its notorious dif?culty can be attributed mainly to two reasons: Due to the inaccessibility of the right context, global optimization criteria are no longer available. This loss must be compensated for by communicating larger search spaces between system components or by introducing appropriate repair mechanisms. In any case, the complexity of the task can easily grow by an order of magnitude or even more. Incrementality is an almost useless feature as long as it remains a local property of individual system components. The advantages of incremental processing can be effectiveonly if all the componentsof a producer consumerchain consistently adhere to the same pattern of temporal behavior.

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Other States, grade: 1,3, King`s College London, language: English, abstract: The relationship between the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is perceived as having a unique importance (Camroux 2009: 4). The first formal meeting between ASEAN and the European Economic Community (EEC) took place in June 1972 (Lim 2012: 47) and was the first of its kind between the precursor to the EU and another regional entity. Nowadays, the relationship is widely considered as a model for interregional relations (Camroux 2009: 4). However, there are many obstacles impeding a further institutionalisation of the region-to-region relations. Negotiations about the enhancement of the cooperation often have stalled during the past decades and the progress of interregional convergence proceeds slowly. The following essay will answer the question whether region-to-region relations between the EU and ASEAN are possible and analyse their degree of the institutionalisation. In order to draw a picture of the development towards interregional cooperation, the essay will summarise the historical emergence of the relationship and identify the obstacles within the current state of interactions. The author will present the argument that region-to-region relations are possible and already exist. However, he will point out that, because of ASEAN's lacking capacities, the interregional relations continue to be limited to certain fields and agreements in the economical and political domain remain mostly bi- and multilateral. The essay will explain the structures of the already existing interregional cooperation and stress how an enhanced relationship would be beneficial for both organisations. Finally, it will summarise its findings and provide an outlook for the years to come.
