Wales versus England. Ambition versus apathy. Technology versus Mother Nature. Tonight´s the night: Ready for a fight? Beneath the blackout of oblivion caused by alcohol, drugs, and abuse of power, which has all but destroyed a seemingly irrelevant community, lays chronically unexpressed human love. Two generations after the coal mines closed down, a metaphorical blackout has seized control of a tiny community in the South Wales Valleys. Life is truly toxic for Tessa, a factory worker who makes clocks by day and drinks herself into oblivion by night. Trapped not only in her own situation but also by her abusive mother, Tessa has one ambition left: to become the human resources manager at the Tick-Tock factory. Meanwhile, the London-based owner of the factory sends his son to do the job, but Sam wants to be a famous musician instead. In a fit of despair, Tessa screams the Welsh National Anthem on top of the Brecon Beacons. There, she meets Sam, who recruits her as his ´´backing singer´´, convincing Tessa that, in the year 2000, there is only one ambition worth pursuing: fame. Amidst much abuse from her mother, Tessa quits the council estate and moves in with Sam, unaware of his true identity. Sam quickly finds himself the target of a culture in which there is no ´´Welcome in the Hillside´´, as the popular myth would have strangers believe. Driven by his obsession for fame and armed with state-of-the-art technology, Sam sets out to control Tessa’s every move while simultaneously maintaining a false identity for himself. Determined to supersede the condescending title of ´´backing singer´´, Tessa sets out to prove Sam wrong about absolutely everything. The idyllic rural setting becomes a stage for psychological warfare in which class, gender, and history clash to the point of catastrophe. When a blackout plunges the valley into darkness, Tessa and Sam are forced to face each other and their innermost selves. In the unfami 1. Language: English. Narrator: The Naked Blonde Writer. I suggest the idea that the hippie movement was a communist movement, with just about no street players having a clue thereof. Those who knew, seized opportunities accordingly. The leaders, the community organizers, described within, took full advantage of rebellious youth. We´ve all witnessed 45 years of bash America, which is now at a fever pitch with our illustrious politicians and attorneys stomping the last remnants of America into oblivion, as constituents just say yes. The example of political correctness as generated by a political party defines your mold of thought. This is not the liberty that drew millions to the promise land, it is the tyranny of communism that is rapidly consuming America. This is the ideological ´´change´´, that is core to the ´´Progressives´´ in this country, and was put on steroids by the left side of the Baby-Boomer Generation, that I un-affectionately call, ´´Hippie-dumb´´, because it is. I grew up in a family of 12 kids in Southeastern Michigan, and graduated from high school in 1969. Within a few months, I was listening to plenty of Jimi Hendrix, and soon became ´´experienced´´ with several kinds of drugs. I went to college for two years and legally avoided the draft. I smoked pot for about 35 years, but as it turned out, I spent half of that time weaning myself from it. Leaving Hippie-dumb behind is one of the best things I have done. The best thing is reading the King James gospel, and when I finished, I sensed an awareness of a presence, that said, without the knowledge of the Bible, one could be in trouble in the next life, and possibly in this life, and that this is a true story, the whole Bible, and that I know it is a true story. 1. THE LATEST NOVEL FROM ROBERT HARRIS ´A thoroughly absorbing, page-turning narrative in which the author pulls us ever deeper into the imaginative world he has created.´ SUNDAY TIMES ´Harris is rightly praised as the master of the intelligent thriller. Genuinely thrilling, wonderfully conceived and entirely without preaching, it probes the nature of history, of collective memory and forgetting, and exposes the fragility of modern civilisation.´ DAILY TELEGRAPH _____________________________________ All civilisations think they are invulnerable. History warns us none is. 1468. A young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arrives in a remote Exmoor village to conduct the funeral of his predecessor. The land around is strewn with ancient artefacts - coins, fragments of glass, human bones - which the old parson used to collect. Did his obsession with the past lead to his death? As Fairfax is drawn more deeply into the isolated community, everything he believes - about himself, his faith and the history of his world - is tested to destruction. _____________________________________ ´[Harris] takes us on a thrilling ride while serving up serious food for thought . . . I doubt there is a living writer who is better at simultaneously making readers´ adrenaline pump while their brains whirr.´ SUNDAY EXPRESS ´A truly surprising future-history thriller. Fabulous, really.´ EVENING STANDARD ´The book´s real power lies in its between-the-lines warning that our embrace of the internet represents some kind of sleepwalk into oblivion. It´s a provocative, tub-thumping sci-fi of which H. G. Wells might have been proud.´ DAILY MAIL ´Harris´ latest work intelligently warps historical fiction and tackles issues of religion, science and the apocalypse in the process. As he flexes his imagination, you will be left pondering as often as you are page-turning.´ HERALD
With this long-awaited and utterly unique debut novel, Shaun Prescott announces himself as a compelling new voice. The Town is magnetic, revealing the true depth of Australia: the good, the bad and the captivatingly ugly. Community radio host Ciara receives dozens of unmarked cassette recordings every week and broadcasts them to a listenership of none. Ex-musician Tom drives an impractical bus that no one ever boards. Publican Jenny runs a hotel that has no patrons. Rick wanders the aisles of the Woolworths every day in an attempt to blunt the disappointment of adulthood. In a town of innumerable petrol stations, labyrinthine cul-de-sac streets, two competing shopping plazas and ubiquitous drive-thru franchises, where are these people likely to find the truth about their collective past - and can they do so before the town completely disappears? Shaun Prescott’s debut novel The Town follows an unnamed narrator’s efforts to complete a book about disappeared towns in the Central West of New South Wales. Set in a town believed by its inhabitants to have no history at all, the novel traces its characters’ attempts to carve their own identities in a place that is both unyielding and teetering on the edge of oblivion. 1.
