Climate change adaptation is currently at the forefront of development discourse for the developing world, especially on the African continent. Given the importance of rain-fed agriculture in the economies of African countries, one of the most appropriate strategies for climate change adaptation in Africa is the use of accurate and timely climate early warning information to guide farming activities. Incorporating the local communities in the development of these strategies, and using their local/indigenous knowledge introduces local context to the problem, ensures ownership and promotes sustainability. This book presents a case study of the Nganyi community of Western Kenya, showing how the local/indigenous knowledge of a community can be used to improve a climate early warning system for enhanced resilience to impacts of climate change.

Six rain fed paddy lands has been selected for study namely Devnagar, Miribari, Dudrajpur, Amirpur, Nolchera and Nandiara. Fish biodiversity was studied and more than 24 small indigenous fish species are found. The ecological and social context into which any intervention is introduced is likely to influence the success and outcomes of collective action. The assessing of the suitability of Community-Based Fish Culture in the rain fed/waterlogged paddy land aims to contribute to the increase the production of the fish in the study area and convert a unproductive system to productive ones. The result reveled from the current study has indicated that water logged paddy land of the greater Ramganj upazila might be a model for the rest of the geographically alike area.

Farmer suicides are the most brutal and unforgiving indictment of the neglect of agriculture by the state and the politics, obsessed with power and the market. Every farmer who dies leaves behind a legacy of debt and desperation for his widow to deal with. They grapple with precarious financial conditions, fragile rain-fed crops, the needs of young children, the health costs of elders. As they fight against these challenges, they succeed sometimes but, mostly, theyfail. Widows of Vidarbha is the story of 18 such widows of Vidarbha who have been invisible to the state, the community, and even their families.
